Preservation Terms
Now that you know a thing or two about archivally-safe scrapbooking from last week's lesson, it's time for a little vocabulary. The following are terms you may run across in scrapbooking magazines or on products.
- Acid-free: Describes objects that are on the higher end of the pH scale (meaning 7.0 or higher).
- Archival quality: Indicates that an item is suitable for preservational use; it is chemically stable and durable.
- Buffered/alkaline reserve: Indicates that a paper has been treated to protect it from forming acids.
- De-acidification: Using a solution to treat paper to neutralize acids.
- Fade-proof/Fade-resistant: Means that an object's color is resistant to fading when in the dark.
- Lightfastness: Means that an object's color is resistant to fading when in the light.
- Lignin: A component of wood that reacts with light and heat to produce acids in paper.
- Pigment Ink: A type of ink that is not water-soluble, and which adheres to a surface rather than penetrating it.
