Scrapbooking Styles Part II

In last week's lesson, you learned about four different styles of scrapbooking: clean, geometric, art deco, and mod. This week, I'll discuss four more: whimsical, playful, retro, and feminine. The lines between these styles are not as crisp as in last week's lesson.

Whimsical

Whimsy is difficult to define. Layouts in this style are more typified by the subject matter - reflection, hope, and other thoughtful or emotive topics. They vary widely in their actual construction, but are generally marked by fairy tale themed embellishments, pastel colors, sweeping curves, and fun shapes.

Playful

This style is all about vibrancy - bold, bright colors; asymmetrical layout; fun (maybe even kid-themed) fonts. They work well for photographs of children, of course, but also for photos about the lighter, more child-like side of adults. These layouts are freeing to do, because by their very nature they are about enjoying life and not finding perfection.

Retro

Last week, I discussed mod as an art style. Mod is really a division of a form known as retro. This style uses fonts, colors, patterns, and other elements that hearken back to an earlier time, typically the 50's, 60's, 70's, or 80's. Exactly which colors are used depends on the decade you are aiming to evoke.

Feminine

How "girly" can you get? This is the style that uses all things that usually appeal to the fairer sex - colors are pinks, mauves, creams, and other muted or pastel colors; ribbons, trims, lace, and pleats are in abundant use; popular fonts are scripts and anything curvy; glitzy embellishments like glitter and rhinestones also fit well with this style of art.

Homework

Craft a layout using one of the art styles described above.
