Update: November 8, 2004 - I have discontinued this
project. Thank you to everyone who participated.
In April 2004, I decided to make greeting cards to send to
a group of soldiers who had just deployed to Afghanistan, who were commanded by
someone I knew. Initially, my plan was to
make blank Mother's Day and Father's Day cards, so the troops could use them to
send back home to their families. Since then, I've decided that cards of all
types would be welcome, and so I have made a number of cards in many styles.
Other card-makers have also made several cards for these troops, and sent them
to me to be forwarded onto the deployed unit. Scans of the cards made so far are
listed below.
If you are a card-maker or scrapbooker and would like to
make cards for the troops (no store-bought cards, please), the guidelines are as
follows:
Please, no 3-D embellishments (so they'll fit in standard
invitation
envelopes).
Cards should measure no larger than 4.25"x5.5" when folded (just
take
a piece of 8.5"x11" cardstock and cut it in half on the long side to
make two cards).
You can send envelopes for the cards you make, or I will supply
envelopes for those without.
Please leave the inside at least mostly blank, so the soldiers will have plenty
of room to write back to their families.
Light-colored cardstocks for the inside, please; they will
probably
only have regular writing implements, and won't be able to write
legibly
on dark colors.
I will periodically mail those cards I've
received
out to Afghanistan.
Feel free to enclose (but please don't adhere to the card) a
small
note with "Made by" and your name and address, if you like.
