Mike has a herniated disk. He’s discussed it here and here. He’s talked about what the injury has done to his body, but not the impact it’s had on the family.
There was a time when I would have dumped my every thought out on the Internet. It was freeing and cleansing. Like Mike, writing about things helps me to cope with them. But I’m not so reckless anymore. Once you put it on the Internet, it’s forever, and some of my thoughts are not really helpful right now.
Suffice to say, what we’re going through is in the top 2 most challenging times our family has ever had. I expect that, in time, we will recover and heal from this – our bodies, and our relationships – but it will take time.
In addition to Mike’s injury and all of the fallout from that, our children have been passing around various and sundry sicknesses for weeks. At present, we know that Thomas has the flu (don’t know which), an eye infection, and an ear infection. Adam may be contracting the eye infection as well. I have a pinched nerve in my shoulderblade, and I think I have the flu. Mike also has a horrible cough and congestion which exacerbates his spinal injury.
That’s the physical stuff. That would be enough, but it’s not everything.
Someday, when everyone is healed and whole and happy again, I might retrospectively put down some of the thoughts I’m now having. It will feel good to share some of them, since I don’t really feel that I can share them with anyone right now.
Mike’s next doctor’s appointment is Tuesday. We’re hoping they will do an MRI and see how things stand with the injury, and that we’ll have some course of treatment that will work (preferably quickly). In the meantime, Twitter is the best way to keep up with us on a day-to-day basis. His and Hers
