Only four months since my last post here? I could have sworn it was longer than that! Anyway, I got bit by the blogging bug again, so here I am. In no particular order:
The kids are getting ready to put on another play, with Mike’s help. This time it’s Gilgamesh. I made costumes for everyone, which took up the better part of May. That’s finally done, and I can get back to earning an income. About damn time, too; sewing was starting to be more work than fun, and I was missing code. I need variety!
I’m also starting to get caught back up on the housework, which has been getting away from me while I was playing Betsy Ross. Not going to do it all at once; incremental progress will be fine.
I took a break from doing “regular” homeschooling with the kids, and now we’re doing an extended unit on Egypt (modern and ancient). They’re really enjoying it and excited, and I’m not feeling bored by teaching either. (see above, “variety”) This week, I think we’ll paint some hieroglyphs and maybe practice writing the Arabic alphabet! (see above, “modern and ancient”)
I’ve almost finished reading Bitter Is the New Black by Jen Lancaster, and it’s so funny! I’ll write up a review once I’m done. In the meantime, I’ve got all of her other books languishing in my Amazon shopping cart. :)
We have 2 fish now – comets. Adam named them Gandalf and Bilbo. Eh. Fish are boring pets. They don’t fetch or sit or beg for treats. You can’t even pet them! But the kids are fascinated (for now) and it’s not a bad way to help them learn some responsibility, so I’m cool with it.
So I’m a black belt now. That happened on April 10th (go me!). Pictures of the ceremony are here. I have had all kinds of “firsts” since then – first class as black belt, first tournament, first demo (this past weekend). It’s exciting, and I’m really happy to be taking on more responsibility and learning different things (like how to TEACH kata, as opposed to how to EXECUTE kata – it’s a whole different ball of wax!).
The weight loss thing has had its ups and downs. As of this morning, I had lost a grand total of 35.2 pounds since July 19th, but I still have 6.8 more pounds to go. I’ve been bouncing around between 3-8 pounds over my goal for 5 months. I really need to just get serious and GET there. (Please, no dieting advice in the comments – I know what I need to do; I just need to stay resolved and hang on to my willpower.) I WILL get there!
The Girl Scout year is coming to a close. I have a troop meeting Thursday, camping trip this weekend, then an Awards Ceremony next week, and I’m DONE until August. I really need the break to recharge and get my enthusiasm back. It’s a draining job, especially as some parents get less and less conscientious. I’ve had 10 girls re-register already for next year, and there are 2 more that I know for sure will be re-registering. Figure in the stragglers and the membership drive the Cluster does in September, and next year looks to see a big troop again. But I’m going to cap it at 18 girls – I have to know my limits.
And with that, it’s time to get back to work. Hopefully I won’t be such a stranger (even though I’m sure I’ve lost virtually any audience I had here!)
