I’ve been chewing on this thought for awhile, and have decided it’s time to just put it out there.
I’m fed up with the Republican party.
I was pretty vocal about my support of George W. Bush back in 2004 (read the archives), but the actions of his administration and other prominent Republican leaders have left me cold.
I think it all started with the Medicare drug bill. Things seemed to go from bad to worse after that, and I never really fell back in love with the GOP after that. I mean, granted, I was happy about the tax cut, but a responsible government would have coupled that with spending cuts. Instead, spending is absolutely out of control. Iraq is (I’m just going to say it) an almost unmitigated disaster, with no endgame in sight.
The party allegedly of small government is involving itself in all manner of state’s rights issues from what constitutes marriage to outlawing Internet gambling. The executive branch continues to make agregious overreaches of its authority. The unwarranted-wiretapping-of-Americans program is a disgrace. And don’t even get me started on the corruption and conduct scandals.
And you know what the shit of it is? The Democrats would be no better. Take Iraq, for example. Sure, they’re critical of “Bush’s handling of the war,” but whenever you try to nail them down about what they would do to change things, they fall back on the same old empty, “We need a new direction.” Fine. WHAT direction might that be?
And it’s not just Iraq. I’ve been disillusioned by the policies of the Republicans, but at least it’s clear they HAVE policies. Twisted, pious, sanctimonious policies, it’s true, but at least they’re about something. I’m so incredibly hungry for a, say, Lieberman independent presidential bid, I can’t see straight. I just want someone I could believe in again. If the Dems would run Joe, I’d vote for him. Even against someone like John McCain, and definitely against someone like Gingrich. But the Democrats won’t do that, so it’s a moot point. The Dems will nominate some polarizing figure again like they did in 2004. Hillary, maybe, or possibly even John Kerry or John Edwards again. And I tell you, I will eat my own shit before I will vote for Hillary. Everything I’ve read from the Left over the last eight years is so bitter, arrogant, hateful, and histrionic that I just don’t see them going moderate. A pity.
Anyway, not really sure where I wanted to go with all this, other than to say I’m sick of the Republican agenda, and thirsty for a change. Is it really too much to ask to expect a party to uphold the Constitution, defend the nation from foreign invaders, and restrict itself from encumbrance of and interference in state affairs?
I guess it is.
