2010 draws to a close, and a new decade is about to begin. A lot has happened this year, some good and some bad:
* I earned my black belt in ChunJiDo.
* I started my second year as a troop leader, and added a co-leader.
* My last grandparent – Marie Payne – passed away.
* I formed new friendships.
* Old friendships were strained, and some ended.
* I saw drama amongst grown people at scrapbooking, karate, and scouts, and realized that drama is an inevitable part of the human experience.
* I learned that I actually really love camping.
* I lost ground on my weight loss goals.
* I sewed lots and lots of clothes, and scrapbooked hardly at all.
* My mom taught me to crochet – the basics, at least.
* I visited Dallas and St. Louis.
* Thomas started Cub Scouts.
* Lindsey started karate.
* I started more volunteer work with scouts and a homeless shelter. Adam helped me serve a meal at the latter, which was a real eye-opening experience for him.
* I did some programming, including stretching myself well beyond what I thought I could do on a couple of projects.
* We hosted some of our fellow developers for an informal “conference”, which brought us all closer.
* My children grew and changed and developed new skills. The changes were remarkable to see.
Next year will be an interesting one for me. This will be the year when I really find out what I am made of. I’ve made more commitments to help at charitable organizations this year; I’ve signed up as an adult trainer for the Girl Scout Council; in the fall I will have two troops of Scouts to contend with; our family is committed to doing lots of camping this year; my dojo is having its 15-year anniversary celebration in March; we are taking a cross-country trip to California to visit with family; my oldest will be moving from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts; and my oldest daughter from Brownies to Juniors.
I’m going to make a few resolutions this year:
* Finally shed the last 15 pounds and reach my goal weight before the trip to California.
* Conclude my Troop Camp Training so that I can take my girls tent camping.
* Get back into the rhythm and habit of regular web development so that it doesn’t feel so intimidating.
* Spend at least 5 hours per month with charitable work.
* Finish at least 5 sewing and quilting projects (starting with finishing Lindsey’s quilt!).
* Teach Kayla how to use her new sewing machine.
* Make better investments of my time with friends – get less vested in the drama.
That’s probably enough to hold me. :) Tonight I’m having a few friends over for games and to help ring in the New Year. I hope you and your families have a very happy and safe start to 2011!
