And in other news, my milk just came in. Like… just 3 minutes ago. My, my, my. Aren’t they purty?? ;)

State of Mind

I am so miserable. I am so very ready to STOP being pregnant! I want my daughter out, where I can see her, and where she can beat up on and abuse someone else for a change. I want to start nursing, and start losing this “baby fat.” I want to be able to bend over and touch my toes without squatting to do so. I want my back to stop hurting, my hips to get back into alignment, my shoulder to quit aching.

I want to regain my normal attention span. I want to be able to eat something – anything – without the horror of heartburn. I want to feel sexy and wanted again. I want to stop smelling like an alleycat. I want to be able to cuddle my other children without feeling like they’re going to kill me. I want the contractions to either STOP, or KEEP GOING – this stutter-stepping shit is getting seriously old.

I hate this.

First Pumping

Well, I did it. I pumped my first 2 oz. of breastmilk. I got to the point where I was too worried about what would happen to Adam if I ever had to have surgery and couldn’t nurse, or got put on antibiotics, or (God forbid) died – I just didn’t want my baby stuck with yucky formula. So I bought a Medela Pump-in-Style from Little Koala. I know I may not be able to pump enough to keep him completely on breastmilk if any of these things happen, but I can keep him on it as long as possible. One thing I learned is that I don’t need the “small-to-medium nipple” insert. A word of caution – if you’re a new pumper, and get the same style pump – try to pump with the large nipple shields FIRST – I got a tiny cut on the bottom of my areola, and it was because of the insert. <THUD!! The sound of my mother-in-law fainting from embarrassment about me talking about my nipples on the Int...

Difficult Day

Some days you ought to just stay in bed. Which I tried to do, but Adam insisted we wake up. If you’ve ever raised a baby, you know how they “insist” on something. He was cranky, which made me cranky. He got over it; I didn’t. I’m still cranky. Adam has taken to getting these 5-minute power naps (PN). He’ll take a PN, then wake up and want to be played with. Then in the middle of it, he’ll have a PN. Then he’ll wake up wet. Then hungry. Then a PN. Just when you try to lay him down to sleep so you can get something done, he wakes up, revved up and ready to go again. It’s exhausting.

Mike’s had an even worse day. Started with a wet diaper, then a dead turkey, then a misbehaving dog, then escaped chickens, then a dead Exchange server. I’m sure there’s more, but on our bad days we try not to irritate each other with talking, so I don’t know what else has happened to him today. I’m sure I̵...

Growth Spurt

Adam has hit another growth spurt. This is exhausting because it means he’s nursing all the time. All I got done was one appliquee block and a little fabric shop-hopping.

Errands With Baby

Last night we went on a little excursion. Mike, Adam and I all piled into the truck and headed for Moscow. First, of course, we had to adjust the carseat, because our little Peanut has grown too tall (long) for the setting we had it on. We went to the Wal-Mart and bought a few things, including a new lamp for night feedings and some shelving for a belated birthday present for Mike. After we left, we dropped back into Pullman and swung by the McDonald’s for some dinner for me (drive-thru, yum.. not) then went to the La Leche League meeting up the street. It was lots of fun. It was a couples’ meeting, and we got to show Adam to everyone there. He was quiet through most of it, but woke up about midway to soil 4 diapers and nurse 3 times. It was my first (semi-)public nursing. I talked to two of the other moms after the meeting, and we’re going to form a playgroup! I’m really excited about that. One of the moms – Holly – had a little boy four days aft...

Three Weeks Old

My sweet little angel baby is three weeks old today. It’s hard to imagine that. He’s already grown and changed so much in that short a time. Physically, he’s not near as puffy and squinty and.. “pulled in” to himself as he was the first few days. He’s put on lots of weight (an informal scale test shows between 11 and 12 pounds now) and has grown at least an inch and a half in length. His hair has lightened, his eyes darkened. He’s lost the little brown love spots he had on his thighs when he was born (some call them stork bites) and he’s got a tiny little case of baby acne.

But wow, in ways OTHER than physical!! He can roll from his back to his right side, he can track movements of people and things from one side to the other, he turns when he hears voices or sharp noises, he can grab beards, hair, and cat tails, he stretches out at night, taking up as much bed space as his little wingspan will al...

First Well-Child Visit

Yesterday was Adam’s first well-baby checkup. Mike went in on Tuesday and ran all of the other errands so that we wouldn’t have to drag a one-week-old around town on such a hot day. The well-baby checkup went splendidly. Adam is now up to 8 lb. 10 oz. and is thriving. As mandated for newborns, he peed all over the scale. :) The doctor says he looks healthy, which we pretty much already knew. He asked me how I was doing, and I told him everything was going along swimmingly. He said we don’t really need to come back until Adam’s two-month checkup (he’ll be getting his first vaccinations then), and I can wait until then, too, for my post-natal physical. It’ll be so strange to go from seeing the doc and nurses every week to not seeing them for almost two months.

After his checkup (and a bout of nursing), we went over to the hospital’s lab to have his follow-up PKU done. It was miserable for the poor little ...

Baby Class

We went to our final baby class last night. It ran long, because there was some material that just didn’t fit in to the 6 nights. Surprisingly, we did an exercise (mental, not physical) that almost made me cry right there in front of everyone. She handed out these cards to everyone with birth procedures on them. They’d have one procedure on the front, another on the back. One card said “No pain meds” on one side and “Pain meds” on the other; another card said “Episiotomy” on one side and “No episiotomy” on the other. We were told to lay the cards out with the side facing up that we wanted to happen in our ideal pregnancy. That was the easy part. Then she said, “Uh-oh! Things didn’t go perfectly. You have to choose 4 cards to turn over.” That was really tough. We picked “IV” (over “No IV”), “Delivery by other than primary doctor”, “Long Labor” (as opposed to s...

What I Want From Labor

Tags: adam pregnancy breastfeeding

We’ve gone to two childbirth classes so far. They meet on Monday nights. There are 3 other couples in the class besides us. All are much more pregnant than we are (the closest is about 6 1/2 months along). There hasn’t been much to report because, quite frankly, not a whole lot has happened in those classes. In the first one, we talked about pain management for the most part. In the second one, we talked about the stages of labor and did some relaxation breathing and exercises. The next one (to be held on Valentine’s Day, whee!) is supposed to include the birthing film, so hopefully that will be more interesting. She says the film has 4 births. The hospital appears to be as accommodating as we’d hoped for – you can labor how you want (they even provide a rocking chair and shower, for example, for laboring moms) you can deliver how you want (for example, on your knees) as long as the doc can catch the baby. Of course, I have no idea how I’ll want t...
