If you keep up with Mike’s journal then you already know my grandfather died. It happened last Wednesday, November 30th. He was 82. It was either a heart attack or a stroke; they don’t know for sure, and because of his age no autopsy was ordered. Adam and I went back to Texas for the funeral. We left Thursday at 9:30AM. We flew from Spokane to Pasco to Salt Lake City to Dallas. The getting there was pretty uneventful. Adam cried some along the way, but for the most part he was content to play or sleep or nurse. I only changed planes once, in Salt Lake City where I also had a 2-hour layover. On the first plane, we were seated next to a nice woman named Judy who helped me with Adam. She held him and played with him and talked to me. We exchanged phone numbers, as she has an antique quilt her grandmother started that she’d like to have finished and I told her I’d talk to some people I know who do quilting and piecing by hand (it was all started by hand).

We went to Spokane for Kayla’s fourth birthday party at the Chuck E Cheese, and on our way up Division it rose out of the horizon, surrounded by mist and shimmering. I did a double-take, since I couldn’t believe what I’d seen – it was that wonderful. What I saw was…
…
a brand-new Sonic.
There is a God.

A good friend will package up some empty CD cases, at your request, for you to store your unmounted stamps in.
A great friend will stash bite-sized Ghirardelli packets in each case before shipping them.
Thanks, babe. mwah

Wow, it’s been a busy month! Of course, earlier in the month was Mother’s Day. I had a wonderful, very low-key day. Mike and the kids got me the movie Walk the Line (Adam chose it, after Daddy informed him that mommy “likes country music and falling in love”), so I just scrapbooked and watched movies all day. Can’t beat that with a stick!
Tuesday was our anniversary. We did what we usually do on that day – took off from work, ignored the phone, and just spent time decompressing and enjoying each others’ company. Seven years, now, and still no itch my man can’t scratch!
Last night, our friend Nanci took the older three kids for awhile so that we could enjoy a nice dinner (almost) alone. Lindsey joined us, of course, but she was mostly quiet and pleasant. Dinner was barbequed country pork ribs, wilted fresh kale, fried potatoes, crab salad, and regular salad. Delish!

I neglected to mention that Linny-Bug had her first well-baby checkup on Thursday. Aside from her brothers and sister acting like heathen devil children in the waiting room, all was well. She weighed in at a hefty 9 pounds, 8 ounces, her length is up an inch to 22.5", and she’s healthy as a horse. The doctor pronounced her “perfect.” The nursing staff had somehow misplaced her hearing test, so we took her over to have that redone. Lindsey loudly objected, however, so they finally gave up – they’re essentially going to fake a new card. After that, it was over to the lab for her follow-up PKU. I hate that part of having a new baby, so Mike takes the baby in and I wait out in the hallway with the boobies. Doesn’t mean I don’t have to hear it, but at least I don’t have to be RIGHT THERE, barely restraining my impulse to murder the technician.

Thursday I took Mary up to her first class at Picture Pages. The original plan had been to have her class at another store, but they canceled on her at the last minute because she was the only enrollee. Grrrr. Anyway, along the way we stopped for dinner at The Golden Corral and for a tiny bit of shopping at Wal-Mart.
It’s always a lot of fun to hang out with Mary. She’s funny and smart, and we share absolutely NO similarity in our choice of eye candy, so we’re always watching different people. Still, I can tell we’re getting close to “go” time with this baby, because ten minutes of walking in Wal-Mart about wore my ass out. Were those aisles always so LONG??
Mary seemed to enjoy her class, even if some of the people involved (including the teacher) were a little too serious about scrapbooking for her taste. She finished with a really cute layout, though...

Week 2 of the Scrapbooking 101 course is up. That and pregnancy (normal, normal, boring, normal) has ruled my life lately, so there isn’t much else to report.
Speaking of which, care to guess on which day I launched ScrapMentor?

We did have a Girls’ Night Out last night (with me, Kayla, Terry, and Mary) that was a lot of fun. We ran a few errands (quick shopping stops, for the most part) and saw the movie Cheaper By the Dozen 2. It was cute and campy, and something we could all watch and get some enjoyment out of. We finished off with dinner at Winger’s (as usual, the wings were great, the rest was ho-hum at best), then came on home.

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot Chocolate
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just set them under the tree? Santa doesn’t wrap presents for this house. Santa does well to get the presents assembled by daylight.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? Multi-colored on the tree, one string of red on the mantle, and one string of white icicles on the house. Hopefully by next year we’ll get more outside lights strung. :)
4. Do you hang mistletoe? No
5. When do you put your decorations up? Whenever I can find the time. We did it last week this year.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Toss-up between Mike’s Christmas morning stollen, and my cornbread dressing
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? Stockings. I loved finding out what would be in the stockings.

Well, the Mall Crawl’s almost at a close – two more days until it’s all done, then the REAL fun (yes, that’s sarcasm) begins. It’ll be as if I’ve crawled under a rock and no one will ever find me again. The truth will be that I’m copying and pasting my poor fingers to the bone. I hate the two weeks immediately following EVERY Mall Crawl, so it’s not like this will be at all unusual.
We had a great Thanksgiving with our friends. It was nice to have a big Thanksgiving dinner, without suffering through two weeks of leftovers. We had a wonderful visit, with lots of time for games and chatting and just hanging out. They left the day after Thanksgiving, and are sorely missed!

We’ve had some friends visiting with us for the last few days – Terry and her children, David and Mary. We’ve had lots of fun, playing lots of card games, and Boggle, and Candyland, and computer games. Adam, Kayla, and Thomas have really enjoyed having all of the extra adults and near-adults around to get attention from. I don’t really remember the last time I saw Mike laugh so much (or cook so much!). I took the teenagers out last night to visit the mall and a couple of other places. The “mommy” in me sort of choked when I sent them off to the mall on their own, with plans to meet up later, but it’s rather refreshing to be around kids and not having to constantly be asking them if they need to “go potty.”
And Mary has gotten into scrapbooking! She finished putting together a whole pre-cut album kit, and is now working on pages of her own design in a new 12×12 book. It’s really a lot of fun to see her sens...

It always happens overnight, like a pimple erupting. One day, it’s not there. Then suddenly, without any advance warning, it is. The Belly.
I started showing today. I say “today” because although we went into town yesterday to run errands, and I was wearing much the same thing as I was today, nobody made a comment. A couple of people who already knew that I was pregnant asked how I was feeling. I told someone yesterday who hadn’t known I was pregnant about our impending addition, and they seemed appropriately surprised.
But tonight, at the Mexican restaurant, the very sweet checkout lady asked whether “the baby” was a boy or a girl. I was only accompanied by Adam and Kayla, and she gestured at my tummy. I hadn’t spoken a word about being pregnant at dinner, and I didn’t know this woman well enough for her to have heard through the grapevine. So she could just tell by looking at me.

May I please just share with you how I am absolutely craving – to the point of fixation – chili cheese fries from A&W? And how I can NOT have them, because they have, like, a WEEK’S worth of allowed sodium at a time when I need to be eating low-salt?
And how much this state of affairs truly sucks?
Just sayin’.

DRINKS
Blackberry Summer Dream – This is a sort of coffee smoothie, compliments of Audrey. Includes a photo of the finished product, which is good enough to… well… drink!
Mesa Grill Margarita – A great cook-out drink, though you probably want to dip the rim into the salt BEFORE you pour the tequila into the glass. ;)
Baby Formula Fruit Smoothies – A way to make nasty-tasting formula more palatable to the younger set! Not to mention you get to expose them to kiwi early on – win/win!

This week, I’m going to be hosting the Carnival of the Recipes! I know, I know….. the one woman who cooks the LEAST of all women on the Internet. But maybe hosting the ‘val will help inspire me! Anyway, I’d really like to make this a “big’un", so all you guys and girls out there who have a recipe to share, please do! You can email it to recipe.carnival@gmail.com. Please post the recipe to your blog, then send the link to it to recipe.carnival@gmail.com. The list goes up on Friday, so if you could get it in before Thursday, that would be great!

I recently joined a Yahoo! Group whose members send each other chocolate every month. I mean, sure, you could just go out and BUY your own chocolate, but what fun would that be? Also, swapping with others around the continent means you might get to try something new that isn’t available in your area. I like this group, and it needs more members. So, if you’re interested in joining, give it a look!

A first, I’m going to “quote of the day” myself, in a conversation I recently had with Mike about my latest shopping trip.
“There is nothing like a room full of full-length mirrors and unforgiving fluorescent lighting to get your fat ass off the Doritos.”
And with that, I am back on my diet.

It’s our turn to bring snack again this Thursday. Normally, this means Mike (over-)cooks for the “moms” (he’s the token Dad), and I cook for whatever class we have. This time, it’s the 2- and 3-year-olds, Kayla’s class. I had planned to make them Blue’s Clues cupcakes, and peeled apples. The snack coordinator (yep, our preschool has an official “snack coordinator") called today and tells me that class has 19 kids in it, and that they tend to eat through all of their snack. I don’t want these kids to be hungry – it’s important to me that they are all full and satisfied. I have enough “gear” to make 27 Blue’s Clues cupcakes, and I have seven or eight apples. I need to make something else, preferably from things I already have here at home so I won’t have to make another trip into town tomorrow. I have a pretty fully-stocked pantry, but specialty items and packaged crap isn’t readily available.
So, got any ideas? All I can come up with are graham crackers (yawn!...

I expect only maybe two of my readers watch enough Iron Chef to find these funny, but as an avid Iron Chef fan myself, I couldn’t NOT blog them.
5. Iron Chef/Jacques Cousteau crossover. Chef: Michiba. Theme ingredient: Giant squid. Gimmick: The theme ingredient strangles Kaga as he unveils it. Outcome: After Kaga is rescued, he mentions suavely that Michiba’s “odori squid sushi” gave him intense personal satisfaction and he is pleased to announce the tetsujin’s victory.
[…]
3. Iron Chef/Geraldo crossover. Chef: Sakai. Theme ingredient: Methamphetamines. Challenging chef: A KKK member. Gimmick: Major fistfights break out in the Kitchen Stadium as the Klansman rudely insults Sakai’s ancestry and is carved into sushi by the agile chef’s filleting knife. Outcome: Lawsuits.

We have all came down with a cold. All 3 of us feel like total crap. Sniffling, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever – we sound like living, walking, Nyquil commercials. Add to this Adam’s getting his top two teeth, and life pretty well just sucks right now. Needless to say, we skipped swimming class on Wednesday of this week. I made a commitment to go sit with my new guild’s raffle quilt this morning, which in hindsight was a mistake. I can’t get out of it, so later this morning I’ll drive to Pullman with Adam and sit at the Beasley Coliseum for 2 1/2 hours. Maybe people will buy raffle tickets out of pity.
